Curious About Acupuncture, but Not Sure What to Expect?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic practice and healing philosophy that takes a holistic approach to the body's interconnected systems. It is a highly personalized treatment that assesses each person’s unique internal patterns and stimulates specific acupuncture points to support balance and healing.
One common hesitation about acupuncture is the concern about needles. While needles are a part of acupuncture, they are nothing like those used in medical procedures. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine—about the size of a human hair—and made from sterilized stainless steel. Some people refer to them as pins to help differentiate them from other types of needles.
Acupuncture is designed to be a comfortable and relaxing experience. We encourage open communication throughout your session to ensure that you feel at ease. If any adjustments are needed, your acupuncturist will work with you to create the best possible experience.
We will walk you through step by step
1. Arrival & Intake
Your acupuncturist will greet you and bring you to the treatment room. Together, you’ll discuss what you’d like to focus on and set goals for the session. Open communication is encouraged, and your comfort is always a priority.
2. Get on the Table
Your acupuncturist will leave the room and guide you on how to get set up on the table. You’ll have a moment to get comfortable before they return.
3. Pulse Diagnosis & Assessment
Once you’re settled, your acupuncturist will return to check your comfort level and perform a pulse diagnosis by gently holding your wrist to assess your unique pulse pattern. This helps determine the best approach for your treatment.
4. Pin Insertion
Your acupuncturist will thoughtfully select acupuncture points and insert the pins. It may feel like a tap from a pencil, or a light tap. Sometimes people feel a ‘zing’, and if there is any discomfort let your acupuncturist know and they can find a different point that is still effective, but not as sensitive. Comfort is a top priority.
5. Comfortability
Your acupuncturist will stay with you for 10 to 15 minutes to ensure you’re comfortable. During this time, they may also incorporate other complementary therapies if beneficial.
6. Call Remote
You will be given a call remote so that when they leave the room, you can push a button that notifies them to return to the room and assist you.
7. Qi
Your acupuncturist will step out for about 45 minutes, allowing the acupuncture points to recalibrate your system.
7. Pin Removal & Closing
Once your session is complete, your acupuncturist will return, gently remove and safely dispose of the pins, and leave the room so you can slowly get up and get dressed.
8. Post-Treatment Check-In
When you’re ready, your acupuncturist will check in on how you’re feeling, answer any questions, and discuss the treatment goals.
Common Questions
Does it hurt?
Typically, acupuncture does not hurt. You may feel a light tap when the pins are inserted, and sometimes a brief “zing” sensation. If you feel discomfort, let your acupuncturist know—they can adjust the pin to ensure your comfort. Your session should never be uncomfortable in a way that detracts from its benefits.
Our goal is to ensure that your experience is positive so that you feel comfortable exploring this profound healing modality. If anything feels off, let us know—we want you to feel supported.
I’m nervous. Am I overreacting?
Not at all! Feeling nervous before your first acupuncture session is completely normal. We understand that receiving any treatment—especially one that involves pins—can feel vulnerable.
You are in control. Your acupuncturist will assist by guiding your body toward balance using the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). You are the expert on your own body, and we always want to hear how you feel so we can tailor the experience to your needs.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your condition. Many people notice improvement after just a few treatments. Acute issues may resolve quickly, while chronic conditions often require ongoing care.
What should I do before and after my session?
Before treatment, eat a light meal and stay hydrated. Afterward, drink water, rest if needed, and avoid strenuous activity to allow your body to fully integrate the benefits of your session. Avoid only drinking coffee before your visit.
